2009 Select Tryouts FAQs

What do I need to bring to tryouts?

Players should arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time to register and warm up. The first tryout will devote the first 30 mins to registration and warm-up. Each child must have a medical release signed by his/her parent or guardian. These forms will be part of the registration process. Players should wear a WHITE shirt, cleats, shin guards, and bring a water bottle. Players are discouraged from wearing their uniforms from previous teams. Parents are not allowed on the playing field during tryouts. There is no cost to tryout.

Should my son/daughter tryout for Select or Bay Oaks?

Your child should tryout for the level of play that they feel is most appropriate to challenge them and improve their abilities. Select coaches generally encourage their players to tryout for Bay Oaks and many consider it a personal success if they move up to a more competitive level. Players may want to tryout for both teams and decide later for whom they may want to play. Parents should consider the level of cost and commitment that may be required at a higher level. For more information on the Bay Oaks Division I program, please visit www.bayoaks.net.

What age group should my son/daughter tryout for?

U10: Born between August 1, 1999 and July 31, 2001
U11: Born between August 1, 1998 and July 31, 1999
U12: Born between August 1, 1997 and July 31, 1998
U13: Born between August 1, 1996 and July 31, 1997
U14: Born between August 1, 1995 and July 31, 1996
U15: Born between August 1, 1994 and July 31, 1995
U16: Born between August 1, 1993 and July 31, 1994
U19: Born between August 1, 1990 and July 31, 1993

Age groups can be every 2 years or every year. Depends of pull of players, if there is enough talent players to form individual age then we separate every year otherwise we do it every 2 years. Please check for specific age on the tryout schedule.

Can my son/daughter play with a team that is older than his/her age group?

Exceptionally talented players will be allowed to play up on older teams only if, in the opinion of the Head Coach, they demonstrate the ability to be in the top group of the players selected for that older team, or, in certain circumstances, with the approval of the Board of Directors.

What Happens At Tryouts?

The first day a number will be assigned which will be worn attached to the player’s shorts on the strongest kicking side during each tryout session. Evaluators consist of the head coach(es) and independent qualified people from the soccer community. All players will participate in the same drills, small-sided games and full field scrimmages. In this way each player will be seen by all the tryout judges a number of times. The tryouts are conducted to be as fair and impartial to all players as possible. Selection is to be based on the performances at the tryout sessions.

How many players will be selected for each team?

At age U-10 there will be approximately 12 players per team. At ages U-12 and above there will typically be 14-16 players per team.

When will we find out whether my son/daughter has made the team?

Selected players will not be contacted until after Bay Oaks has announced their selections. Players will be contacted by the Head Coach by phone or by email as to whether they have been selected for the team or not.

If my son/daughter is selected, when do we have to commit to the team?

A commitment within 48 hours of being contacted by the coach will be appreciated. Many coaches like to compete in Spring Soccer with a team formed through the tryout process. Since the Spring season starts at the end of March or early April, registration and team formation starts in mid-February. Registration and team documentation for Fall Select Soccer begins in April and tournament applications must be submitted by May 1st. There’s a lot of work to be done in a short period of time. Your timely commitment is appreciated by all who are involved.

If my son/daughter does not make the team can we get feedback on how to improve his/her chances next year?

Yes, if your son/daughter does not make a team you may email the coach and ask for feedback on how to improve his/her chances next year. Please remember that the coach makes decisions based on input from the evaluators. Each evaluator is going to see each candidate differently from each other, differently than the Head Coach, and differently than the parent(s). Coach email addresses are provided on the ASC website.

What if my son/daughter cannot make all the tryouts?

The more tryouts a player can attend, the greater opportunity they have to exhibit their skills. All players are expected to make at least two tryouts, and a player must attend at least one tryout to be considered for the team. Attendance at the third tryout may be by invitation only so it is important to make the first two tryouts.

What if my son/daughter is sick or injured during tryouts?

If your son/daughter is sick or injured you should contact the appropriate coach. Coach and teams assignments are on the ASC website along with email addresses for the coaches.

Will there be more than one team selected?

ASC’s goal is that every child has the opportunity to play soccer at the level that is most appropriate for him/her to inspire confidence, build skills, and develop knowledge of the game. Provided there are enough players with the appropriate skill level, there may be an additional Select team at each any age group that may play in the Division III Competitive Playing League or in a high-flighted Division IV Recreational Playing League. There will be an attempt to form these teams predominately of younger players for that age group for longevity and so that these teams may compete in age appropriate tournament play.

What is the time commitment expected in order to play on a competitive team?

Select is a competitive program, and teams travel to tournaments throughout the Bay Area and Northern California. Players are expected to attend camps and/or practices starting in July or August. The league season begins in September and ends in mid-November. Post-season play for Association Cup is during January and February for teams older than U-10.

Some travel will be involved. During league play half of the games will be at home and the majority of the away games will be in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. There will be 2-4 tournaments/jamborees that may require travel outside of Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

What is the cost of playing on a competitive team?

Parents are called upon to pay for registration ($195), uniforms (approx $100-$150), player’s traveling expenses (varies) and, at the discretion of the Head Coach, possibly trainer costs or camps for the team. These fees vary, but you should expect pay approximately $350 for U-10 teams and more for older teams with an extended schedule. The registration fee includes contribution to a team fund that the coach will use for equipment and training, as well as tournament fees paid by the club. A limited number of needs-based scholarships are available. For information contact registrar@alamedasoccer.org .

What if it is raining the day of tryouts?

In the event of rain, please check the ARPD hotline (747-7540) or the ASC website www.alamedasoccer.org for possible cancellations and schedule changes.
